society is going cross-eyed

Though I do believe reading is reading and any reading is good, I am disheartened (and slightly disturbed) that most of the books adults are going crazy about are ones that are written for adolescents and teens.

Harry Potter: age range: 9-11
Twilight: 12-17
The Hunger Games: 12-17

Certainly didn't see such enthusiasm of people grabbing copies of Hawking's "A Brief History of Time" or tweeting how every needs to read Jonah Lehrer's "Imagine: How Creativity Works."
Do you think this is a reflection of society?

I have one theory that the internet is dumbing everyone down. I used to think it was just kids/teenagers but I now think it's adults too. It seems like the days are gone of stretching out and reading a good book for hours on end. Plus, the internet bombards us with crappy stuff like teenage vampire novels and the like. And you know what else? Adults are so busy working and dealing with attitude laden kids that they just don't have the bandwidth for an age appropriate book :)

Good post there Doc and I agree Jane. As a culture we are quickly losing the ability (and desire?) to broaden our knowledge through reading adult books with adult topics. It's simply too easy to plop down with a teen vampire book. Sort of an escapism in my opinion rather than challenging.

I agree with both of you. I think we all need to challenge ourselves more.
